Surveys indicate that newts are present in about a third of Central Bedfordshire ponds, higher than the national average. If a proposed planning development is within 500 metres of a pond, great crested newts become a consideration for planning applications, which has implications for housing, infrastructure and other construction projects, as well as mining and quarrying sites.
