Britain's subsurface has significant, but as yet largely unrealised, potential not only to supply and store various forms of energy, but also to store climate-changing CO2. A new 31m pounds UK Geo Energy Observatories (UK GEOS) project will lead science for testing and monitoring new energy technologies in the subsurface. Just as a radio telescope looks out into the sky, the new UK GEOS will look downward, collecting new data on the character and potential of the underground.
