Proposals to extract 175,500 tonnes of coal over 42 months at a 28-hectare site near Chesterfield have been dismissed on appeal due to the likely effect on local residents. The inspector concluded that, despite the temporary nature of the proposals, the site was within 100 metres of a substantial number of properties and would result in adverse levels of noise and visual effects at different times during the life of the project. The six-metre high bunds proposed would not satisfactorily mitigate the impacts and the local community would require an "excessive degree of forbearance".
