Moving millions of tonnes of aggregate by rail seems the obvious step if we want to keep the volume of road traffic at an acceptable level. But it is not as easy as you might think. Transporting aggregates from their place of origin to place of use is a taxing, time-consuming business for all quarriers and suppliers. The main reason is that most of the limestone deposits in the UK sit to the north and west of the imaginary "stone line" cutting between the Wash and the Severn Estuary, while most of the demand for that limestone is to its south and east.
