The draft Kent Downs Area of OutstandingNatural Beauty (AONB) management plan2020-2025, outlining the proposed strategy forconserving and enhancing the Kent Downs, iscurrently published for consultation.The Kent Downs has historically been thesite of many mineral activities, and still holdsresources of sharp sand, gravels and buildingsands. Pressure to exploit these resources islikely to increase. The proposed managementof the AONB restricts mineral extraction toexceptional circumstances, and aims torestore worked out quarry sites to enhancethe local landscape.In particular, the draft plan principlesinclude: encouraging activities designed toprotect, conserve and enhance geologicalexposures of the Kent Downs; carefullymanaging and restoring existing mineralsand waste sites in or around the Kent Downs;and reducing the pressure for new mineralssites, for instance through the provision ofwharfs to enable alternative sourcing.Read the full consultation here
