The MBRRACE-UK report, 'Saving lives, improving mothers' care', is part of the confidential enquiries into maternal deaths and morbidity between 2014 and 2016. It found that women from black and Asian ethnic backgrounds have a five-fold and almost two-fold difference respectively in maternal mortality rates than white women (Knight et al 2018). Death as a direct result of pregnancy is very rare in both Scotland and the United Kingdom (UK) as a whole (Scottish Public Health Observatory (ScotPHO) 2018); however, it poses a very real threat to women of certain ethnic minority backgrounds. Despite this being acknowledged by the report as a key area for action, it is still unclear what factors can be directly identified as contributory to such disparate outcomes or what specific recommendations for change might be. The aim of this essay is to determine the complex nature of the experiences of ethnic minority women, focusing on the role of maternity service provision as a significant contributory factor in public health inequalities. Key themes centre round the provision of culturally congruent care, improved communication and the role of the midwife in improving woman-centred care for ethnic minority women.
