Indonesian coffee production declined to an estimated 10.8 min 60-kg bags in 2016/17 from 11.4 min a year earlier, due to an El Nino-induced drought in 2015 that interrupted flowering and ripening of the coffee cherries. The drought was most acutely felt in lowland areas of Southern Sumatra and Java, where approximately 75% of the country's robusta crop is grown, while arabica production - primarily located in Northern Sumatra - was only little affected.
