摘要

Manifestations of the spatial symmetry of d and f shells formed by equivalent electrons of transition-metal ions in crystals and other ordered media are considered. It is shown that sizes of crystals and the rare coordination number of ions can be explained in terms of the noncrystallographic symmetry of these shells. The symmetry of the d shell may cause manifestations of elements of fivefold symmetry in the crystal faceting and the structure of molecules and affect the properties dependent on matching of the intrinsic symmetry of the shell and the translational symmetry of a crystal.
