In the 1960s and 70s,the RAAF obtained and converted a number of Volkswagen Kombi's for use as mobile control towers to be operated specifically at remote airstrips to deploy fighter jets particularly during exercises.They were also used for training purposes at established bases.Officially known as the 802 Mobile Strip Operations Telebriefing System(SOTS),the vehicles were fully equipped with the appropriate radio communications equipment(no radar though) allowing the controllers to communicate with aircraft and other air traffic units.The conversion would usually involve the installation of a raised observation cab or in some cases,a bubble,located on the roof of the vehicle normally where the’pop top camper’section was located.However,the Kombi wasn't the only part of the system.Also included in the’package’was a trailer which housed a generator and an aircondi-tioning unit.The generator was,in some cases,a converted VW engine which drove the aircondi-tioning unit which in turn pushed ducted cool air into the back of the Kombi and out via louvres located in the box section of the van.The vans were usually painted in an all over yellow scheme or a red and white striped scheme.
