Nonguided and Image-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration: The technique for fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of soft tissue tumors is the same as for other types of lesions. The length of the needle depends on the location of the lesion. Thorough palpation and estimation of size, site, and consistency of the tumor is essential. Since the surgeon may often want to decide where the needle should be inserted, close communication between the aspirator and surgeon is mandatory (Fig. 1). If the surgeon does not specifically indicate the insertion point/points, aspiration through the vertex is recommended [1,2].
