New and revised species of Archaeopus RATHBUN, 1908 (Decapoda: Brachyura: Retroplumidae) from the eastern Pacifi

Three new species of Archaeopus are described from the Cretaceous and Paleocene of the eastern Pacific Archaeopus hoploserratus n. sp. from the upper Campanian Northumberland Formation, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, A. burgessi n. sp. from the middle Campanian Cedar District Formation, Denman Island, British Columbia, and A. morenoensis n. sp. from the Maastrichtian Moreno Formation, California. One specimen from the upper Paleocene Santa Susana Formation, California is compared with A. bicornutus SCHWEITZER, FELDMANN, FAM, HESSIN, HETRICK, NYBORG & Ross, 2003. The descriptions of A. bicornutus and A. rostratus SCHWEITZER, FELDMANN, FAM, HESSIN, HETRICK, NYBORG & Ross, 2003, are herein emended to include features of the carapace not originally described for both species. Examination of the type specimens of A. schenki (VAN STRAELEN, 1939) and A. antennatus RATHBUN, 1908 allows us to establishA. schenki as a junior synonym of A. antennatus. Finally, A. mexicanus SCHWEITZER, FELDMANN, GONZALEZ-BARBA & VEGA, 2002 is considered a junior synonym of A. lunicarina SCHWEITZER & FELDMANN, 2001, due to the species sharing main morphological characters. Nine species of Archaeopus are described in this study: eight from the eastern Pacif c region and one, A. ezoensis (NAGAO, 1941), from the Late Cretaceous of Japan. The addition of three new species suggests that Archaeopus originated and was well established in the northern Pacif c from the Late Cretaceous (Campanian) through at least the Paleocene.
