The article by Jokhio et al. highlights the importance of quantifying the burden of morbidity due to obstetric fistula in rural populations. Despite substantial global efforts to quantify the causes and determinants of maternal deaths, in-depth efforts are lacking to 'characterize and understand the burden of obstetric complications and morbidity suffered by childbearing women in developing countries' (Stanton J Health Popul Nutr 2012;30:121-3). As the majority of maternal morbidities are preventable and treatable, rigorous data on the burden can allow for prioritisa-tion of programmes for prevention and treatment.
