摘要

This study documents cell planiforms resulting from natural convection in a pond located in northeastern Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The cell planiforms were recorded in a slush layer on the pond surface. Nine-hundred twenty-two cells were observed in a 1115 m(2) portion of the pond. Cell diameter/depth ratios were typically between 2 and 5 consistent with the observed convection patterns. The conditions that allowed the convection patterns to be observed occur infrequently and provide insight into the types and scales of convection. Weakly supercritical conditions may have produced hexagonal and spoke convection patterns.
