摘要

TRADITIONALLY, FARMERS IN Murang'a district in CentralKenya have relied on coffee for their income. However, thecollapse of the coffee sector in the 1990s prompted thesefarmers to seek for more viable and profitable alternatives in order toearn their living. With the abundance of rivers and other water resources in thedistrict, French beans have become a leading horticultural product.Research has shown that in Kenya vegetable production is currentlythe most important commercial horticultural enterprise amongstsmallholders, especially those with very small farms of less than twohectares. About 80 per cent of Kenya's fresh for-export vegetables are grownby smallholders, who sell them to exporters through contacts orbrokers. Some of the vegetables are processed and sold in domesticmarkets. Besides providing income directly to farm households thatcultivate the crops, commercialisation of farming can generate farmemployment and stimulate greater rural non-farm economic activities.Kenya's smallholder farmers have increasingly taken adopted a hugeamount of horticultural production both for domestic consumption andexport.
