We have heard plenty about the polluting impact of end-of-life tyres when fly-tipped,inappropriately disposed of or just dumped somewhere. But the impact these tyres have on our environment has now taken a new dimension.A leading champion of the environment here in Europe has just opened up the debate even further with a demand that tyres should be subject to an air polluting tax.His rationale for this is a simple one.As tyres on our vehicles wear down through abrasion with the road surface, they release thousands of’toxic’particles,he claims. This is a supposition yet to be fully researched;but our European Chemicals Agency(ECHA) is certainly looking at the whole issue of abrasion resistance which is currently subject to a Europe wide consultation. However, this issue is a live one with the focus not just on tyre dust, the effects of brake dust are also being explored.
