Measuring the Impact of Assistive Technology on Family Caregivers

摘要

In general, it is understood that assistive technology (AT) has the potential to enhance the functioning of users. Moreover, in the process, it allows them to be less dependent on the assistance of others (Federici, Scherer, and Borsci, 2014; Federici, Tiberio and Scherer, 2014). For the vast preponderance of ATs, this secondary assumption is not buttressed by systematic evidence (Henderson, Skelton, and Rosenbaum, 2008; McWilliam, Diehl-Jones, Jutai and Tadrissi et al., 2000). To create an enhanced understanding of the impact of AT on caregivers, we require the following: (1) better empirical evidence; (2) an improved conceptual understanding of the inter-relationship of outcomes between assistance users and family caregivers, and (3) more developed and refined measurement tools.
