The profitability of agricultural holdings in less favoured areas (LFAs) is lower due to unfavourable climate and production conditions. This disadvantage should be counterbalanced by "compensatory payments" that should support the continuous use of agricultural land and preserve the rural region. This paper summarises the economic results in the years 2003-07 of agricultural holdings in LFAs in the Czech Republic and looks at the influence of subsidies on the profits/losses of the enterprises.
