Long-term monitoring of semi-natural woodland at Mar Lodge Estate NNR

In 1998 two monitoring transects, totalling 1.8km in length and 3-7ha in area, were established in semi-natural Caledonian pine and birch woodland at Mar Lodge Estate National Nature Reserve. These transects were resurveyed in 2008 and 2018. From 1998to 2008, following a reduction in the resident population of deer in the Mar Lodge woodlands, there was a modest increase in the number of regenerating tree seedlings, above vegetation height, recorded in the survey area. From 2008-2018, following a further substantial reduction in deer numbers, there was a 2,074% increase in the number of seedlings above vegetation height. There was a 78.9% increase in trees >1.3m in height from 2008-2018. This recruitment sits against a background of changes to woodland structure, with a small increase in tree basal area and a small decrease in canopy cover over the monitoring period, and an increase in the deadwood resource. From 1998-2018, mortality of mature Scots pine trees was 2.6% and mortality of mature birchtrees 16.5%. There were also changes in ground flora structure and diversity from 2008-2018. Monitoring has shown that from 2008-2018 there has been a shift towards a more diverse woodland structure, with an increase in woodland regeneration, deadwood provision and vascular plant diversity. Monitoringhas also helped to inform management decisions throughout this period. It is hoped that this valuable experience, and lessons learned from it, will encourage other land managers to set up long-term monitoring of woodlands across Scotland.
