14 July visits to Tullo and Wantonwells FarmsOn a sunny day in July we visited two North East farms that over the last 30 years have converted to woodland in different ways.Tullo farm sits on the intensively farmed Buchan Platform stretching from Aberdeen to the Moray Firth. We met John Strachan who over the last 30 years has converted half his 150ha traditional mixed farm into a haven for wildlife. He initially planted 3hato provide shelter for stock under a Farm Woodland Scheme in 1988. He continued to add trees under various Woodland/ Forestry Grant Schemes and currently has over 40ha of woodland. He has also constructed some 20 ponds, has riparian woodlands and grassmargins, and the farm is managed under various agri-environment schemes all with the aim of benefiting wildlife.
