A hallmark of Art Frankel's long, distinguished career has been his insistence on incorporating earthquake observations, to serve as reality checks on his numerous pioneering source and ground-motion studies, and in constraining the USGS National Seismic Hazard Maps (NSHM). These maps, which are used as the basis for seismic design parameters for hundreds of billions of dollars of new building construction every year, are also critical to loss estimation research and help guide earthquake preparedness and mitigation efforts by other federal and state agencies. This combination of fundamental observational research, applying research results to the NSHM, culminating in improved building codes and reduced losses from earthquakes, makes Art an outstanding candidate for the Jesuit Seismological Association award. I believe his work from observations to implementation, an effort toward societal benefit, also mirrors the public service motivations of early Jesuit seismologists to mitigate earthquake damage and loss of life.
