Space Geodesy Infrastructure in Colombia for Geodynamics Research

GeoRED, the Spanish acronym for "Geodesia: Red de Estudios de Deformación" or "Geodesy: Deformation Studies Network," is a research, innovation, and development project based on space geodesy, which takes a multifaceted approach to understanding the geodynamics and tectonics of northwestern South America with an ultimate goal to reduce the risks associated with active plate boundaries. Space geodesy nowadays is an indispensable tool to determine interplate and intraplate continental deformation and to achieve a better understanding of the seismic cycle. In this article, we highlight efforts in Colombia to create a geodetic infrastructure that is composed of 108 continuously operating permanent stations and 382 field stations that will aid in determining the present crustal deformation in the country. So tar this has led to a much more detailed and quantified picture of the northward migration of the North Andean Block (NAB), the process of strain partitioning and plate coupling in the Nazca plate subduction zone, and the rate of boundary-normal shortening and boundary-parallel displacement in the Eastern Cordillera. This allows a better understanding of the seismic cycle and the associated hazard. It is the policy of GeoRED to focus on the gathering of high-quality Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) geodetic data to be shared as part of collaborative research with governmental institutions, universities, and research centers within Colombia, and also with international partners in neighboring countries of Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Peru. GeoRED is financed by the Colombian Government and executed by the Colombian Geological Survey (CGS).
