摘要

Agent-based modeling pervades mathematical biology due to its power to link simple particle dynamics to large-scale emergent behavior. Predicting the manner in which changes to the particle dynamics manifest in the observed system behavior is difficult, however, and it typically requires costly computations. We ameliorate this difficultly via a method of interfacial reduction for agent-based models. This reduction applies in settings where the emergent system behavior partitions space into regions of different agent types. The terms in our reduced model directly relate back to specific mechanisms in an agent-based model; its simplified form then allows us to analytically characterize necessary conditions to observe certain ubiquitous stripe patterns seen in nature.
