摘要

Latypov et al. (2017) present the concept of periodic intrusion of basal magma flows and lateral mixing as the “traditional” interpretation of the evolution of the Rustenburg Layered Suite (RLS). This is a generalisation that displays a lack of appreciation of the evolution of thinking surrounding layered complexes, particularly over the past 50 years. The “traditional” view for many years was in fact the cumulus theory advanced by Wager and Brown (1968), based on gravitative crystal settling, aspects of which have been incorporated into models of layered complexes even in recent years.
