Being recognised as a great place to work isn't just good for a company's employees, it means that the bottom line thrives as well. What makes a company great and how can your company achieve greatness? My father worked in a caring, highly paternalistic company that even put the housekeeping in a special brown envelope for him to give to my mother. It worked in those days, because people were prepared to toe the party line. The upside was that he felt very safe. The downside was that he never reallystretched himself- never truly tested his capability. The employee contract is different today. People want more autonomy, they want to know they can develop their talents, and they care about how the company treats them and others.
