"Unprecedented" is the word that many have used to describe the ramifications of our current global pandemic. The current and forecasted number of people infected globally by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) does not rival the most severe historical pandemics, such as the 1918 influenza, which is estimated to have infected one-third of the world's population at the time and resulted in fifty million deaths. This difference in severity is likely due in part to differences between the 1918 flu virus (H1N1) and the virus responsible for COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). However, it is also due in large part to the differences in the global response. It is in reference to this response that the term "unprecedented" is worthy of mention, at many levels in our society.
