In the last decade, skin diseases are becoming more relevant to public health. Social impact and costs are being considered as priorities, since several studies revealed that morbidity and mortality rates related to skin conditions are increasingly high [i]. Skin diseases are spread worldwide and become more prevalent as the population ages. Skin and subcutaneous disorders were described as the eighteenth leading cause of global disability adjusted life years, in an analysis of the Global Burden of Disease 2013 study. Excluding mortality, skin diseases were considered the fourth leading cause of disability worldwide [2]. Recent studies and statistics promoted an intense research in the field, and the number of patents are growing proportionally. Besides skin diseases, continuing innovation is a key point for the industry of cosmetics and perfumes. Protection of innovative ingredients through patents is becoming central to the discovery of new formulations and their consequent business plans. Special attention is being paid to natural ingredients, mainly to reduce premature skin aging [3]. This is out of the scope of this analysis, but it is maybe the most relevant application of natural products nowadays, and also the most patented ingredients related to skin conditions.
