In a recent paper, Berls and Ruiz (2018 Phys. Educ. 53 045001) report that an aluminium tube with a lengthwise slit yields induction braking on a falling magnet. The discussion of the effect, however, is incomplete and, in particular, the diagram showing eddy currents in the cut tube is misleading. An alternative account of the effect is given.
