摘要

This paper discusses the National Conference 2000 for Towns and Villages in Bloom, which was held in Angers, France from 12-13 October 2000. Subjects dealt with include: tourism, seafront flowering, the enhancements of heritage and the sociologicalimplications of amenities. The health of plants in amenities is dealt with during a session entitled "reconciling plants and urban areas". On this particular subject, attention is given to problems which plants can cause to visitors to parks and garden (e.g. stains caused by bird droppings and honeydew falling from trees, rashes caused by caterpillar hairs, poisonous berries, proliferous weeds, etc.). As far as plant protection is concerned, chemical treatments are essential in certain cases, but are seen in a bad light by the general public. Preventive treatments are preferred wherever possible, either at the stage of choosing plant varieties (prefer pest and disease resistant varieties), or in choosing position and also by carrying out a thorough examination of the health of the plant on leaving the nursery or greenhouse.
