Early Yield and Growth Performance of Wild Hevea Germplasm in India

Natural rubber with its center of origin in the Amazon rain forests of Brazil is a strategic industrial crop cultivated mainly in the South East Asian Countries. In the present study, a set of 545 wild Hevea accessions from three provenances of Brazilviz., Acre (AC), Rondonia (RO) and Mato Grosso (MT), along with four popularly cultivated clones, were evaluated for their early yield growth performance in the first three years of growth in a nursery in the traditional rubber growing region of Keralastate, India. The characters studied include yield and growth characters such as girth, girth increment, plant height, crotch height and single leaf area. Highly significant clonal variability was observed for yield and all the growth characters viz, girth, girth increment, plant height and crotch height execpt single leaf area. The yield ranged from 0.3 g/t/t. (RO 2153) to 4.8 g/t/t. (AC 4394); girth ranged from 8 cm (AC 3559) to 19.4 cm (MT 200); girth increment from 1.1 cm (MT 2229, RO 5430) to 7.4 cm (RO 2846); single leaf area from 33.7 cm2 (RO 2790) to 232.5 cm~2 (AC 3755); plant height from 2.4 m (AC 3559) to 7.5 m (7/118) and crotch height ranged from 1.7 m (AC 3559) to 5.5 m (AC 4114). The accessions were ranked using all the above parameters,execpt single leaf area, for overall performance, Rank sum values ranged from 38 to 2660 with a general mean of 1339. Correlations worked out among the six quantitative traits revealed that yield is significantly correlated with all the growth characters except single leaf area. Based on this study, the top 10% of the potential accessions showing early growth vigour and yield were identified which could be of use in future crop improvement programmes.
