摘要

Withania somnifera, an important medicinal herb is known for building greater endurance and curing rheumatism, leprosy and arthritis. Alkaloids and steroidal lactones are the main constitutents of root extracts of Withania somnifera. Benzene and Ethanol extracts of root were found to possess high to moderate antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacteria, as revealed by in vitro Disc diffusion method followed by determination of minimum inhibitory concentration. In the present study, high inhibitory activity of various extracts has been observed against Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Serratia rubidaea and Lactobacillus sp. These results could be used to control infections due to these pathogens.
