Of some 1,000 pesticide active ingredients evaluated under the EU review of existing ais, just 26% or around 250 have been re-registered,the European Commission says. The majority(67%)have been eliminated because ai dossiers were either not submitted, were incomplete or were withdrawn by the industry,it notes.About 70 ais failed the review and have been removed from the market because the evaluation did not show safe use with respect to human health and the environment, the Commission adds."The review of existing pesticides has led to the removal from the market of more than two-thirds of these substances.I can now say with confidence that our food has become greener,"says EU Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou.
