Opioid overdoses can be fatal.The opioid antidote naloxone is effective in reducing mortality, provided it is administered promptly. Nasal naloxone appears to take a few more minutes to take effect than intramuscular naloxone. However, several studies in the real-world setting show that when naloxone is made available to opioid users at risk of overdose and to family members, friends or carers, nasal administration has similar efficacy to that of intramuscular administration in reducing mortality. In patients who experience an opioid overdose, naloxone mainly causes an acute withdrawal syndrome, but this is a minor reaction in a life-threatening emergency. Despite its very limited evaluation, the single-dose naloxone nasal spray available in France appears easy to use. It should be offered to patients at risk of opioid overdose and to their families, friends or carers, giving precise instructions on how to use it.
