According to a large comparative trial of evolocumab versus placebo added to statin therapy for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, after a mean follow-up of about 2 years, evolocumab reduced the incidence of cardiovascular events more than placebo (preventing 1 event per 67 patients treated), but without reducing all-cause or cardiovascular mortality. The differences observed are of uncertain clinical relevance. Little is known about evolocumab's long-term adverse effects. Its short-term adverse effects are mainly injection site reactions, hyper-sensitivity reactions, and infections. These data are insufficient to show whether evolocumab represents a therapeutic advance for these patients, and warrant an additional, independent trial.
