Burns and deep necrosis, sometimes with permanent sequelae, have been reported with topical wart treatments based on concentrated acids. These adverse effects are not justified given the benign nature of warts and the limited efficacy of these products. In 2014 and 2015, a topical wart treatment based on concentrated formic acid was the subject of reports of serious skin necrosis (1, 2). For example, in a girl aged three and a half years, extension of the necrosis to involve the extensors of the distal phalanx of one finger resulted in grafting, which did not prevent a deformity of the finger that was still present after 3 months, with a favourable outcome at 9 months. In 2012, Urgo Verrues Tenaces0, based on monochloro-acetic acid, was withdrawn from the market in France, after several cases of serious burns were reported to the French Health Products Agency (ANSM) (3). These adverse effects also occur with wart treatments based on other acids, such as trichloroacetic acid and even salicylic acid(4).The following are a few notable examples occurring in France or elsewhere, published between 2008 and 2016.
