In the April issue of Preventive Medicine Caban-Martinez et al. (2010) reported the dismal levels of influenza vaccination among US health care workers before the H1N1 epidemic of 2009. The National Health Information Survey (NHIS) estimate of vaccination coverage for all healthcare occupations in 2004-2008 was around 45%, with lows of 32% among support occupations such as birth attendants, phlebotomists, and transporters. The annual vaccination coverage did not rise above 50% between 2004 and 2008. Previously, Pearson et al. (2009) had also reported in this journal that only 34% of current smoking vs. 48% of never smoking US adults aged 50 years or more had been vaccinated for influenza during the 12 months preceding the 2006 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. In this month's issue of PM Althoff et al. (2010) report that the vaccination coverage of HIV-infected women was about 56% from 2006 to 2008, which was higher than the rest of the nation, but still far below the expectation of full compliance with the guidelines.
