EFC Working Party 7 on 'Corrosion education and computer applications', chaired by Josep Costa of Barcelona University, had organised this session, the keynote lecture of which was presented by Stuart Lyon of UMIST, UK. It focussed on use of the internet for vocational training in corrosion engineering and provided a progress report on the Mentor-C Project, which is receiving support from the European Commission with the aim of developing distance learning materials for use by technicians, engineers and experts. The courses will be capable of use for self-study purposes, without supervision, or as tutored courses in conjunction with a course provider, which would also be able to provide certification on successful completion of the programme. The Level 1 course for technicians will be delivered by means of HTML/XTML materials. Level 2 for corrosion engineers will use web-based virtual learning materials for delivery via WEB CT. It is making use of BSc/MSc level materials provided by UMIST, preliminary trials of which have been conducted with the help of volunteers, 18 of whom had finished the course successfully. The Level 3 course for corrosion experts makes use of world-class information resources including 'Corrosion' by L. L. Shreir together with specialist modules. Wide use will be made at all levels, where appropriate, of selected extracts from the EFC corrosion videos, which have been digitised for the purpose. On completion, the course materials are to be tested with the help of members of EFC WP7 from educational establishments and industry.
