Chlamydia trachomatis is now the most frequently diagnosed bacterial sexually transmitted disease in the United Kingdom. As it is usually asymptomatic but can give rise to serious sequelae, including persistent pelvic pain and infertility, it has been proposed that screening programmes be implemented in some countries. However, the benefits of doing and how to best approach screening are contested and the English programme, one of the earliest, is now being reassessed. Here the authors review the history of the English programme and ask what might become of it.
