Government and Parliament are at loggerheads over genetically modified crops in Peru. The national Parliament has unanimously approved a ten-year moratorium on the import and use of GM crops. The approved bill establishes the Ministry of the Environment as competent authority on the subject, and creates a "technical evaluation and risk prevention assessment committee on the use of living modified organisms". It must issue a risk assessment report within two years.
