Cross-pollination from genetically modified to conventional maize has been found in Uruguay. It is the first such case in South America, newswire Checkbiotech reports. Uruguayan University of the Republic researchers analysed five pairs of commercial maize fields where farmers planted GM maize at about the same time as a nearby non-GM crop. The highest percentage of transgenic seedlings was 0.8% in a conventional maize crop 100 m from the GM maize field.
