摘要

The EU and the UN FAO have agreed to help 12 countries across eastern Europe, the Caucasus and central Asia to clear up huge stocks of obsolete pesticides. Almost half the world's stockpiles of such products are in 12 ex-Soviet Union republics from Belarus to Uzbekistan, totalling some 200,000 tonnes, the partners believe. The EU and the FAO, along with NGOs, will assist and provide training in reducing the risks from such products and the use of agrochemicals over the next four years. Some ?7 million ($9.3 million) has been earmarked for the work, of which the EU will provide ?6 million ($8 million) . EU ambassador Laurence Argimon-Pistre says the Union seeks "a higher level of environment protection" with its eastern neighbours.
