Flufenoxuron has been granted EU biocide approval for use as a wood preservative. However, the approval is for only three years, rather than the standard ten, because the active ingredient is persistent, liable to bioaccumulate and toxic. Applications for products based on the ai will also be subject to a comparative risk assessment to check if safer alternatives exist.
