The insecticide, novaluron, is to be phased out in the EU after ChemChina subsidiary Makhteshim-Agan Industries (MAI) decided to withdraw its application for approval. The European Commission has instructed EU member states to withdraw existing approvals by October 3rd 2012. They may allow up to a further year for stocks to be used. Novaluron holds provisional approvals in four EU countries: Cyprus, Greece, Hungary and Romania. Worldwide, it is registered in some 50 countries for food crops and residential use, as Rimon, Diamond and other trade names. Novaluron was approved by the US EPA in 2001 under its reduced-risk scheme.
