As a longtime adjunct professor in New York University’s School of Professional Studies, where I regularly teach three courses devoted to copyediting and grammar, I am always on the lookout for a book that I can recommend to students for one course aspect or another. When it comes to Grammar Intensive for Publishing Professionals, I have never lit upon a single volume sufficient for the course content and level of intensity. All of the grammars I have checked out have seemed either too remedial, out of date, and full of errata or they have swung to the other extreme and seem intended for advanced linguistics studies. So I wind up cramming my classes full of recycled PDFs from various sources supplanted by my own everincreasing stock of explanations, exercises, and exclamations exhorting students to remember the difference between a restrictive and nonrestrictive relative clause by this mnemonic or that, knowing all along that students for whom English is the native language will not remember such admonishments beyond the next semester and that for students for whom English in a second or third tongue such mnemonics often fail because they presuppose English awareness from childhood.
