Full data sets used in the EU risk assessment of Monsanto's genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant NK603 maize have been made public on the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) website. The data were previously only available upon specific request to the EFSA. The move heralds the launch of an initiative to facilitate access to data and enhance transparency in EU risk assessment. The choice to start with NK603 reflects "the level of public interest" after a controversial French study last year claimed that the EU-approved maize line and its associated glyphosate herbicide caused harm to rats. The study was subsequently found to be scientifically unsound by the EFSA and several national regulators [Agrow No 655, p 9).
