Condition-based maintenance policies for systems with multiple dependent components: A review

Complex systems are monitored using sensors, meters and computational devices, and this has resulted in improved optimization techniques and condition-based-maintenance (CBM) policies. However, the application of CBM is lagging behind because the current models do not take into account the inter- component dependencies. To overcome this deficiency, current research on CBM is focusing on complex system structures and their dependencies. The existing literature considers three types of dependencies namely, structural, stochastic and economic. Structural dependencies refer to the situation where replacement of one component will result in the replacement of some others as well. Stochastic dependencies mean that the condition of one component depends on the conditions of some other components also. Economic dependence means the cost of maintenance of one component and the cost of maintenance of multiple components together. At present this classification is not sufficient to take care of the needs of the technological advancements. In this article these are modified as structural, stochastic, resource and economic dependence. Technical dependence includes performance dependence also. An additional factor introduced is resource dependence which means availability of tools and manpower for maintenance.
