Organizations of any nature can be conceptualized as open systems that interact with their environments to obtain resources for survival and growth. As environments become more uncertain, interdependent organizations are prone to create negotiated environments where exchanges are governed by formal and informal mechanisms. For such organizations, external interaction is observed as necessary because few organizations are self-sufficient with respect to vital resource generation. Supply chain quality management (SCQM) is a mechanism for governing quality of resource flows between interdependent organizations. However, SCQM practices are likely to assume different orientations depending on whether volume or technological uncertainty is present. The article studies the association between environmental uncertainty and intensified SCQM practices among supply chain members. A conceptual framework is proposed based on several propositions linking environmental uncertainty and intensified SCQM. (66 refs.)
