The European Commission has established a standard format for reporting results from post-marketing monitoring of genetically modified crops. Separate formats have been adopted for reports on the cultivation of GM crops and for those on the import, processing and use in food and feed of GMOs. Post-marketing monitoring is a condition of approvals under the EU GMO registration Directive (2001/18). Companies have to submit monitoring plans as part of their applications for GM crop approvals. However, it was only this year that the Commission and EU member states started discussions on how best to analyse the reports produced (Agrow No 577, p 14).
