Cuba is to adopt genetically modified crops, the official newspaper, Granma, reports. It says the country is developing its own insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant maize. The newspaper quotes Dr Carlos Borrota, deputy director of the country's genetic engineering and biotechnology centre, the CIGB. The fundamental goal of the development of GM crops is to ensure the population's food security, Dr Borrota reportedly says. Cuba has strong regulatory bodies covering biosafety and "enormous political will", he adds.
