The adoption of genetically modified refuge-in-a-bag (RIB) Bt maize seed mixtures increases the risk of problems of monitoring insect pests, say some US academics. Such RIB mixtures make insect resistance management (IRM) "risky" because of larval behaviour and greater adoption of insect-resistant maize, says Professor David Onstad from Illinois University (Urbana) and lead author of a study published recently in the US Journal of Economic Entomology.
