India's Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh, has put on hold the commercial cultivation of genetically modified insect-resistant brinjal (aubergines) developed by Monsanto licensee Mahyco. The brinjal carries the Bt cry1Ac gene conveying resistance to fruit and shoot borers (Leucinodes orbonalis). Based upon public consultations held in seven cities between January 13th and February 6th (Agrow No 584, p 18), the Minister decided to opt for "a cautious, precautionary principle-based approach and impose a moratorium".
